Party Wrap-Up & Scary Morning

Katie's grad party was a big success. The weather held off. It was quite warm and humid, but we had a nice breeze (or brez) as some might people say.;-) It never rained, which I'm thankful for. We had tons of good food and lots of great help and I think even Sandi had a good time! Yay!
She even learned that having a chafer doesn't necessarily mean that certain parts of the body could use a little baby powder on them!

Sunday brought a little unwanted excitement into our daily routine. Jeanine and Murray (her golden retriever) and my grandpuppy were spending the night. Murray and I were having a nice morning with many belly rubs and scratchin's to Murray's delight and I was enjoying my coffee.

It was time for me to get ready for work so I'm in my laundry room which is right off my bedroom and I could hear Murray nosing around in the laundry. I didn't think anything of it, until I went back in. To my dismay, he had gotten into a box of mouse poison that I forgot I still had in there from a little mouse problem we were having earlier this summer. Well needless to say, my stomach dropped to the floor. I grabbed the box and it didn't look like he had gotten too much. There were a few blue crumbs laying around on the floor and the box still looked almost full. I went in to wake Jeanine to tell her that I wasn't sure but that I thought that I had maybe just poisoned her puppy! What a horrible thing to have to be woken up to. She got on the phone to an emergency vet clinic near her home (she lives an hour away) they said we needed to give him a fourth of a cup of hydrogen peroxide with a turkey baster to induce vomiting and to get him right in. It's 8:00 in the morning and I'm looking everywhere for peroxide and I don't have ANY. I then call the person that I call in all of my clutch situations..........You know it's Sandi. Poor thing, after having been busy all the previous day and evening with a house full of guests, I have to be the one who calls too early and wakes her up. She didn't have any either. NOW WHAT! I could hop in the car and drive 1o minutes to Shop 'n Save, but they don't open till 9:00 on Sundays. GRRRRR............Wal-Mart it like 20 minutes up and 20 minutes back on a good day! Then the lightbulb goes off! (yes, believe it or not, I'm sometimes actually able to think in an emergency situation). DUH, we have a first aid kit at work. So I call Larry and he brings some up. While we're waiting for Larry, I call our vet. He is only about a half hour from our house. He tells me the same thing that Jeanine's vet said to do. So Jeanine and I decide that we'll take him to our vet instead of her going all the way back to Pgh. So, Larry bring the peroxide and we procede to make this poor dog sick. He was such a good boy. We got it all down and the poor thing is foaming at the mouth and he's so darn cute while doing it. He is even wagging his tail after we put him through it. We didn't know how long it was supposed to take. The vet said that if the first treatment didn't work then to do another one. We waited a little while (it seemed like forever) and we thought that we'd have to do another dose, when all of a sudden, out comes the entire contents of his belly. WOW, was there a lot of stuff in that thing!!! First of all I had just fed him breakfast. Then Larry tells me that he too had fed him breakfast (the lucky duck had 2nd breakfast - that's for any LOTR fans out there). Next up is the rawhide that I had given him earlier. He apparantly softens them up with a very little chewing and then swallows them whole, I could have wiped it off and put it back in the box! Then voila, out comes the little blue crumbs that we were watching for. He didn't get that many, but to tell you the truth, there were more in there than I expected. He was sick a few more times and then he was back to his cute little self. Jeanine and I took him to the vet, and he gave him a good exam. Told us what signs to look for and gave him a shot of vitamin K. That helps to put the coagulation ability back into his blood that the poison takes away. The vet didn't think he had eaten enough to become very sick since Murray does weigh 80 pounds. I don't know how much he would need to injest before bad things would happen, but we weren't taking any chances!!!
We came home and Jeanine cooked him hamburger and rice. He got a good meal and went swimming in the pond and had a pretty good end to a day that started out pretty darn scary!
I just don't know what to expect from him when he sees me pull out the turkey baster this Thanksgiving!!! ;0}

awwww poor puppy. Our Buddy did that last fall and we did the same thing. But since he is a small dog the vet said we needed to give him vitK every day for a month. Just in case. T
here is a big difference between 10 lbs. and 80 lbs. LOL
Enjoy your week!
